Search for a new pillow and you will be offered copper, memory foam, bamboo, cooling, hollowfibre and feather as though they are six options on the same list.
They are not. Two of those words describe the cover, three describe the filling, and one describes an outcome. That is why comparing a copper pillow to a memory foam pillow feels slippery: you are comparing a jacket to a jumper and asking which is warmer.
Here is the straightforward version.
Every pillow is two decisions, not one
The filling decides how the pillow feels and whether your neck is supported. Memory foam, hollowfibre, feather and down. This is the decision that affects your sleep.
The cover decides how the surface feels, how air moves, and how easy the pillow is to keep clean. Copper infused, bamboo viscose, cotton, polyester. This is the decision that affects maintenance and, to a lesser degree, temperature.
A copper pillow and a memory foam pillow are not alternatives. A copper pillow usually is a memory foam or hollowfibre pillow, wearing a copper cover. Ours come both ways.
So the real question is: which filling, and which cover.
Choosing the filling
Crushed memory foam
Shredded rather than a solid block, which makes a large difference. A solid foam pillow traps heat and holds one shape. Crushed foam contours the same way but leaves air gaps through the middle, so it breathes better and you can move it around to adjust the height.
Best for side sleepers, anyone waking with neck ache, and anyone who wants a pillow that holds its height all night rather than compressing flat by 2am.
Hollowfibre
Fine synthetic fibres, each hollow down the middle, loosely packed. Light, springy, easy to reshape, and the airiest of the three.
Best for back sleepers, people who move around a lot, hot sleepers, and anyone who likes to fold or punch a pillow into position.
Feather and down
Natural, soft, mouldable, and the one that feels most like a hotel. It compresses more than the others, so it needs plumping, and it is not the right choice if you have a feather allergy.
Best for people who want softness and do not need firm neck support. Our duck feather pillows sit here.
Choosing the cover
Copper infused
Copper oxide bonded into the fabric. Copper is genuinely antimicrobial, and research on copper treated hospital bedding consistently shows fewer microbes on the fabric itself. What that means for a healthy person at home is a smaller and much less certain benefit, and we go through the evidence properly in our honest look at whether copper pillows work.
The practical case for it: the cover stays fresher between washes. That is most useful in guest rooms, holiday lets and spare beds where pillows sit unused for weeks.
Bamboo
Worth knowing what you are buying. Almost all bamboo bedding is bamboo viscose, meaning bamboo pulp dissolved and reconstituted into fibre through heavy chemical processing. The result is a genuinely lovely fabric: smooth, cool to the touch, good at moving moisture away from skin.
But the processing is also why the claims you often see attached to it do not hold up. Raw bamboo has some natural antibacterial properties. Those largely do not survive being dissolved into viscose. If antimicrobial behaviour is what you are after, bamboo is not where you get it, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling the plant rather than the fabric.
Buy bamboo because it feels cool and silky. That part is real.
Plain cotton or polyester
Nothing wrong with it. Most pillows have it, it washes, it works. The question is only whether a treated cover is worth the difference to you.
Putting the two together
Using our own range as the worked example:
- Side sleeper who wants low maintenance: crushed memory foam filling, copper cover. Support plus a cover that stays fresh.
- Hot sleeper: hollowfibre filling first, because the filling governs heat far more than the cover does. Either the copper hollowfibre or the cooling hollowfibre.
- Back sleeper, no particular problems: hollowfibre, any cover. Do not overthink it.
- Guest room or holiday let: copper, in a multipack. This is the use case where a fresher cover genuinely earns its place, because the pillows sit for weeks between guests.
- Soft, hotel feel above all: duck feather.
Is copper worth it over a plain cooling pillow?
A fair question, since we sell both with the same two fillings.
The cooling range gives you the same crushed memory foam or hollowfibre with a removable zipped cover and no copper. If your priority is temperature and support, that does the job.
Copper adds the antimicrobial cover and the textured 3D hexagon surface. Worth it if the pillow lives somewhere that benefits from staying fresh between washes, or if you are dust mite sensitive and want fewer hospitable surfaces. Not worth paying a large premium for if the pillow is on your own bed and you wash your bedding weekly anyway.
The one thing that matters most
If you take nothing else from this: get the filling right for your sleeping position, then pick a cover.
A perfect cover on the wrong filling will still have you waking up with a sore neck. The right filling under a plain cotton cover will not. Covers are a refinement. Fillings are the decision.
